It’s a question most new mums want to know the answer to – what clothes do I really need for my new baby? I mean, is there anything more adorable than tiny little newborn baby clothes? But the sheer amount of options on offer can be a tad overwhelming! So, what are the most essential newborn clothing items, and how do you stop yourself from going a little crazy shopping during that wonderful nesting phase?
One of the most important things to remember is that babies grow SUPER quickly, so don’t buy too much in those smaller sizes, buy ahead and be ready as you watch your newborn grow!
Stay away from any fussy buttons, bows or ties, or anything too decorative that might be considered a choking hazard. And trust me, when you’re surviving on barely any sleep, anything besides basic snaps and zippers will mean that adorable outfit will be thrown in the too-hard pile! Don’t forget to choose fire-safe sleepwear – check your labels or stick to all-natural fabrics.
Sizing will differ between brands and you might find your newborn will go up a size well before the actual date! Weight is a much better measure, and most clothes include weight in their labels
It take a while to get used to dressing a wiggly newborn! Look for wide stretchy necks, snaps and zippers at the front, looser sleeves and most importantly, easy snaps or openings at the crotch for all those nappy changes!
Trust me, no one has the time (or inclination!) to handwash in the early newborn days! Clothes that are 100% cotton are ideal as they are comfy, durable and wash well. There are also plenty of organic and bamboo options now available too.
One of my babies was in 3-6 month clothes at only 1.5 months! Buy ahead for your baby to grow into them but be mindful. Certain seasonal clothes like coats or swimwear are difficult to buy in advance as it can be difficult to predict size a few seasons ahead.
This is your chance to pick out a special outfit for all those memorable first photos. Choose something warm and soft with no fiddly bits – remember you’re dealing with a newborn and lots of nappy changing! This outfit makes the perfect keepsake – I still have both my babies “coming home” outfits stored away. (Click images to shop products)
Keep it simple – think snap crotches, envelope necks, stretchy and soft material. The bodysuit is a staple perfect for layering with stretchy pants and come summer it works as a basic top with shorts or leggings. Babies also hate having clothes pulled over their heads so look out for side snap options too. You can start with a multi pack in your newborn sizing and stock up on the bigger sizes in short or long sleeve – trust me you can never have enough of these! (Click images to shop products)
These are perfect for newborns to wear during the day or night. Look out for those with foldover handmitts – great to stop scratching little paws and zipped versions are fabulous when you’re sick of snaps. 4-6 pieces will do the trick! If your baby is born in the summer, short leave rompers with legs are also perfect. (Click images to shop products)
Pair stretchy pants with long or short sleeve bodysuits for an easy instant outfit! Choose from footed or open feet options and look for comfy waistbands. 2-6 pairs are a good start in the early days. (Click images to shop products)
